PGY-1 Rotations

Intro to Family Medicine4 weeksFor their first block, residents have a series of introductory sessions as well as core curriculum sessions and simulation sessions for two days a week. For the remaining three days a week, residents work with their core family medicine preceptor.
Intro to Emergency Medicine4 weeksCore experience at the Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) Emergency Department; combination of day, evening and night shifts, as well as weekly learner simulation sessions. Additionally, there are weekly curriculum sessions introducing emergency care; many sessions are with interprofessional colleagues.
Core Family Medicine8 weeksCore experience in office-based family medicine in Saint John. Includes scheduled time to complete shifts in the Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department (1x/week), in-patient care, and family medicine call, along with weekly core family medicine curriculum sessions.
General Medicine4 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital, including Internal Medicine Teaching Unit in-hospital care, as well as consultation services to emergency department.
Obstetrics/Gynecology4 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital, including Labour & Birth Unit at SJRH, operating room, wards, gynecology clinic, and emergency consults at SJRH ED.
Geriatric Medicine4 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Includes inpatient geriatrics consultation service, inpatient geriatrics assessment care, and outpatient clinics.
Palliative Care4 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital, including in-patient care on the Palliative Care Unit, in-hospital consultation service, Hospice care, home consultations and emergency consultation service.
Orthopaedics4 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital, including clinics at SJRH, operating room, wards, and consultation services to the emergency department at SJRH.
Pediatrics4 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital, including clinics, in-patient care and emergency consults at SJRH ED.
Community Family Medicine10 weeksCore experience in the community of Miramichi. Residents will do comprehensive family medicine including office visits, inpatient care, and family medicine call, as well as shifts in the Miramichi Regional Hospital Emergency Department.
Anaesthesia2 weeksIncluding operating room experience and on-call services; this rotation takes place in Frederiction.

Core Family Medicine16 weeksCore experience in office-based family medicine in Saint John, including shifts in the Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department, inpatient care, and family medicine call, as well as weekly core family medicine curriculum.
Reproductive Health4 weeksFamily medicine clinic-based rotation including Family Medicine Prenatal Clinic, Women’s Health & Pap Clinic, gender affirming care, sexual health, care of the assaulted patient, as well as on-call experience in the Labour & Birth Unit and emergency consults at SJRH ED.
General Medicine4 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital, including Internal Medicine Teaching Unit in-hospital care, as well as consultation services to wards and emergency department.
Surgery2 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital, including operating room, wards, consultation services to the SJRH ED, and clinics (including minor procedures, breast evaluation, proctology).
Surgical Clinics2 weeksSpecialty surgical clinics in plastic surgery and orthopedics, including urgent follow up from the emergency department. With hands on skills in office procedures and casting.
Pediatric Emergency Medicine4 weeksPediatric emergency medicine at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Community Family Medicine12 weeksCore experience in the community of Miramichi. Residents will do comprehensive family medicine including office visits, inpatient care, and family medicine call, as well as shifts in the Miramichi Regional Hospital Emergency Department.
Emergency Medicine4 weeksCore experience at the Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) Emergency Department; combination of day, evening and night shifts, as well as weekly learner simulation sessions.

Core Family Medicine8 weeksCore experience in office-based family medicine in Saint John, including shifts in the Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department, inpatient care, and family medicine call.
Intensive Care Unit4 weeksSpecialty rotation at the Saint John Regional Hospital, including inpatient critical care medicine and emergency department consultation service.
Cardiac Care Unit4 weeksSpecialty rotation in cardiology inpatient care and Cardiac Care Unit (CCU). Includes in-patient care, clinics, code team, and emergency consultation service.
Critical Care Selective4 weeksResidents may choose between an additional experience in Intensive Care Unit or Cardiac Care Unit.
Community Family Medicine8 weeksCore experience in the community of Miramichi. Residents will do comprehensive family medicine including office visits, inpatient care, and family medicine call, as well as shifts in the Miramichi Regional Hospital Emergency Department. Residents will do approximately two days per week in family medicine and three shifts per week in the emergency department.
Trauma Selective4 weeksIncluding inpatient CCU rounds, emergency and inpatient consultation services
Selective(s)4 weeksWill be targeted as a trauma rotation away via sites such as St. Mike’s or Sunnybrook in Toronto (location TBD) with focus on TTL experience and trauma related procedural skills
